Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts Continue
Yesterday, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump traveled to Texas where they received a briefing on Hurricane Harvey relief efforts with local leadership and relief organizations. The President and the First Lady also met with state leadership at the Emergency Operations Center.
Statement by First Lady Melania Trump on Hurricane Harvey
"The effects of Hurricane Harvey will be felt in Texas, Louisiana, and other parts of the country for many months and years to come. So far, 1.7 million people are under orders to evacuate their homes, and, as the floodwater in Houston rises, sadly, so will the number of evacuees. I want to be able to offer my help and support in the most productive way possible, not through just words, but also action. What I found to be the most profound during the visit was not only the strength and resilience of the people of Texas, but the compassion and sense of community that has taken over the State. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with the people of Texas and Louisiana." - First Lady Melania Trump

"FBI admits unauthorized program against American gun owners," attorney and policy analyst Paloma Capanna charged in an update on Robinson vs. Sessions, a lawsuit on civil rights violations resulting from matches on the "No-Fly List."
"The US DOJ Attorneys admitted in their Answering Brief that
the FBI screens 'all' Americans seeking to lawfully purchase a firearm
against the Terrorist Screening Database ("TSDB") upon submission of
the ATF Form 4473," Paloma wrote, quoting:
"Since 2004, as part of its background checks for all potential firearms purchasers, the NICS has searched a file containing a list of known or suspected terrorists that is exported by the Terrorist Screening Center from the TSDB into the FBI's National Crime Information Center database."

Dr. Duke Pesta on Common Core and the Shocking Sexual Education Standard...
Submitted by Theresa Tillett, Tillett4CT.bolgspot
Dr Duke Pesta speaks about the Common Core Sexuality Standards...
As we are now approaching the municipal election cycles where our town council members and board of education members will be elected it might be a good time for you to start asking the candidates where they stand and what do they know about Common Core and what is going to be taught to our children in our public schools.
Do you know what is being taught to your children or do you mistakenly think that our public schools are teaching our children to read, write and critically think like they used to do many many years ago?
Our taxes keep being raised yet for all of the money that is being spent what is happening in our schools?
Are our children being better educated or are we just wasting our money on highly paid administrators who in turn waste money on highly over priced items that do not actually help our students?

Ohio VFW Pulls Browns Games After Team Protests the Anthem on Monday Night Football
Photo from Facebook |
by Dylan Gwinn
The Cleveland Browns, and their fans, can’t have nice things. Mainly because they make terrible decisions and unforced errors that result in failure and fan disillusionment. Now, they’ve done it again.
In response to the large, twelve-player protest the Browns staged on Monday Night Football, a protest that for the first time included a white player. A local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Strongsville, Ohio, has said that they will no longer air Browns games on the weekend.
Tim Zvoncheck, commander of Post 3345, told WKYC that he appreciates the rights of people to speak out. However, he feels the way the players have chosen to express themselves, crosses a line.
“For us, it doesn’t sit real well. We understand that everybody has the right to free speech. Everybody has a right to their specific feelings. But we don’t feel they have the right to disrespect… we’re not going to stand for this anymore.
“We fought for the rights of everybody in this country. We joined the military to fight for the freedom of speech and the right to bear arms. We respect that.

Roots in Ripon - The Playbook Plan
Image from TheFrontPorch.ogr |
Chuck Roots
28 August 2017
My column, Roots in Ripon, first began fifteen
years ago when I was called up from the naval reserve for a two-year stint in
support of the Iraq War. The editor of the then Ripon Record, Joe Franscella,
asked me if I would be willing to write a weekly column for the paper,
describing my experiences in going back to war. My previous experience was as
an enlisted Marine in Vietnam.
Writing about something new and different each
week has not been difficult primarily because I have so many interests that my
mind is constantly roiling over some issue, problem, political dilemma, family
dynamic, etc., that I never lack for material. After the demise of the Ripon
Record, I was picked up by the Manteca Bulletin which also publishes the Ripon
Bulletin.
The reason for my stating the background of my
column is to simply say that I write about a wide variety of topics and themes.
Though I am acutely interested in politics, I do not venture into this arena
all that often. My reason is simple: In today’s political climate, tensions run
high, lines are drawn, assumptions are made (depending on your political
slant), and banter, debate and general discourse have become a thing of the
past. Growing up, I would listen to my folks have heated discussions with their
best friends over political matters, but it had no bearing on their love for
one another. I wish we could return to those times. Today, the measure of
political discourse goes something like this: If you don’t agree with me, then
you’re the enemy!” Sad.
That said,
I would like to bring to your attention a topic I find very troubling. On the
Internet, I found a document of roughly fifty pages written by journalist David
Brock, entitled, “Democracy Matters: Strategic Plan for Action.” It was further
described as “A Confidential Memo on Fighting Trump.” This is the Democrat
Party’s playbook on how to undermine and defeat President Donald Trump. It has
“Private & Confidential” on each page.
A special meeting was held by the Democratic
leadership outlining the game plan for various liberal, left-leaning
organizations to go after Trump and all Republicans, as well as those few
Democrats who might agree with the President’s policies and agenda on occasion.
The following is the list of tactics to be used by these liberal/progressive operatives:
Media Matters (for America);
American Bridge (21st Century); CREW;
and Shareblue.
This is their approach to undermining the Trump
Administration:

Trump - Week 31: Addressing Threats
TRUMP PENCE WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
8.26.17
8.26.17
The President and all of us at Team Trump send our thoughts and prayers to the families of our brave sailors who were injured and lost after a tragic collision at sea, as well as to those conducting the search and recovery efforts after the USS John S. McCain collided with a merchant ship.
HONORING THOSE WHO FOUGHT AND CONTINUE TO FIGHT
Last weekend, the President signed the Global War on Terrorism War Memorial Act while at Camp David. This bill begins the process of establishing a memorial honoring those who have fought and died in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001 and those still fighting for us today. We must never forget those who pay the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.
MAKING AMERICA SAFE AGAIN
Poor, Black, & Unreachable At 14
I'm posting this here under the category of "other items of interest" because I believe in Wayne and his mission. What he does transcends borders. Kids everywhere, including here in south central Ohio, need to hear his message.
By Wayne Winsley
Founder & Executive Director of Brave Enough To Fail Inc.
At age 14, I was living in an orphanage
in Cleveland Ohio, had failed eighth grade the previous year, and
basically given up on school. I was a poor black kid who, the experts
would say, had given up on my future and was too set in my ways to be
motivated to change. I was destined for one of two places, behind bars
or dead.
One day, a friend of mine’s dad was
disappointed with his report card and began to lecture him. Without
intending to, without even realizing that I was in the room, his dad
said the words that changed my life forever.
“Always strive for excellence no
matter what you do. Excellence will overcome, poverty, prejudice, and
adversity every time. Just be excellent at whatever you choose to do.”
That simple message motivated me to make the choice that saved my life.
I chose to go back to school and do the
absolute best I could. Because of that choice, I didn’t wind up behind
bars or dead. Instead I went on to serve my country honorably in the
United States Navy which honed my discipline, self-confidence, and work
ethic. Those tools gave me the courage to pursue my dream of being a
standup comic which in turn led to a two decade career as a radio
broadcaster. The communication skills I developed over that time
prepared me to become what I am today, a teacher, and a multi
award-winning motivational speaker.
I know first hand that even without intention, a word can change a child’s life.
That is why I’ve dedicated the rest of my
life to delivering a message of inspiration and motivation to as many
young people as possible through my organization.

State Rep. Scherer Encourages Schools To Apply For Statehouse Transportation Grants
Photo from ballotpedia |
The grants are available to help Ohio schools, which receive state funding, defray the cost of field trips to the Ohio Statehouse and are based on one-way mileage from the visiting school to Columbus. There are 25 grants available in each of the following mileage categories, for a total of 75 grants:
• 1 to 50 miles: $200
• 51 to 100 miles: $300
• 101+ miles: $400
Limited to fourth through 12th grade trips during the 2017-2018 school year, the grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and have been known to be awarded within a matter of minutes of the grant application process opening.
“Having the opportunity to work in this historical place is one of the best parts of this job,” said Scherer. “I encourage schools from my district to apply for these grants, so we can give our children the opportunity to learn more about Ohio’s rich history.”
More information on the application process can be found here:

Brown Reinforces Support for Rural Ohio, Hospitals Following Release of Study on Health Disparities in Appalachia
Senator Brown |
Appalachian Regional Commission Study Finds Ohio’s Appalachian Region Suffers from Lack of Access to Health Care
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Sen. Sherrod
Brown (D-OH) reinforced his support for rural Ohio and hospitals in the
region following a new report that found the Appalachian region faces unique health challenges and lack of access to care and doctors.
The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), the
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), and the Foundation for Health
Kentucky authored the report, Health Disparities in Appalachia.
The report compares health indicators of the Appalachian Region to those
of the nation as a whole, and found substantial disparities in health
outcomes and other health-related factors in Ohio’s Appalachian Region.
“This study reveals what we know is true about the unique health challenges Appalachian Ohioans are facing,” said Brown. “From
finding doctors in the area to increasing wages and household income,
there is more work to be done to get Ohioans access to the health care
they need. We must continue to invest in this region through sources
like the Appalachian Regional Commission and Rural Development program,
so that we can improve the livelihoods of Ohioans in the Appalachian
Region.”
Key report findings for Appalachian Ohio include:
- Higher Rate of Cancer Deaths: Appalachian Ohio’s cancer mortality rate is 15 percent higher than the national rate and five percent higher than that of non-Appalachian Ohio.
- Lack of Primary and Specialty Physicians: The supply of primary care physicians in Appalachian Ohio is 25 percent lower than the national average, and 30 percent lower than the average in non-Appalachian Ohio. Supply of specialty physicians in Appalachian Ohio is 60 percent lower than the national average, and 65 percent lower than the average in non-Appalachian Ohio.
- Lower Median Household Income: The median household income in Appalachian Ohio is 22 percent lower than the national median, and 15 percent less than the median income in non-Appalachian Ohio.
In July, Brown released a report
outlining devastating impacts repealing the Affordable Care Act would
have had on rural communities in the Appalachian Region, including
health care coverage loss, hospital closures, job loss and cuts to
opioid and substance abuse treatment services.
Brown has pushed to expand resources to Ohio’s
Appalachian Region, and helped secure federal funds for research,
infrastructure and economic development projects across the Appalachian
Region. In March, Brown blasted
President Trump’s proposal to eliminate the Appalachian Regional
Commission (ARC) entirely, citing the need to stimulate local economies,
provide job training, expand broadband access in rural areas, and
support for local infrastructure projects.
In the 2014 Farm Bill, Brown supported a strong
Rural Development title. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural
Development grants fund everything from building hospitals, to
combatting opioids, to wastewater treatment infrastructure.

Latest Court Ruling on Backpage Underscores Need for Congress to Fix Law, Pass Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act
Senator Portman, photo from cleveland.com |
Courts Have Consistently Ruled that Congress Must Fix Communications Decency Act In Order to Protect Trafficking Victims
WASHINGTON, D.C. – In Sacramento,
California yesterday, Superior Court Judge Lawrence Brown cited Section
230 of the Communications Decency Act in dismissing pimping charges
against Backpage.com, providing further momentum to the bipartisan
effort to fix the law to ensure that federal and state prosecutors can
hold the company accountable for facilitating online sex trafficking, as
well as ensure that victims can get the justice they deserve.
Recently, U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-OH), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT),
and more than two dozen of their bipartisan colleagues introduced the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act to fix the law.
In his ruling, Judge Brown said it is up to Congress to amend the Communications Decency Act:
“If and until Congress sees fit to amend the
immunity law, the broad reach of section 230 of the Communications
Decency Act even applies to those alleged to support the exploitation of
others by human trafficking.” — Judge Lawrence Brown, Sacramento Superior Court, August 23, 2017
Senators Portman and Blumenthal issued the following statement in response to the court ruling:
“This court ruling underscores the need for
Congress to act, and to act with urgency. Every day that goes by, more
women and children are trafficked online, and this must stop. It’s time
to hold these online traffickers accountable for their actions, and
that’s why Congress must pass the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act.”
When victims have attempted to seek justice
against websites like Backpage that knowingly facilitated the crimes
against them, courts have generally sided with the company, citing the
blanket immunity granted by the Communications Decency Act (CDA). While
well-intentioned, the CDA was never intended to protect sex traffickers
who knowingly facilitate criminal activity. In court rulings across
the country, judges have made clear that it is Congress’ responsibility
to act to protect sex trafficking victims and fix the CDA. That’s exactly what the narrowly-crafted Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act would do. In addition to yesterday’s court ruling in Sacramento, here's what several previous court rulings have said:
- “This is a hard case — hard not in the sense that the legal issues defy resolution, but hard in the sense that the law requires that we, like the court below, deny relief to plaintiffs whose circumstances evoke outrage… The appellants' core argument is that Backpage has tailored its website to make sex trafficking easier. Aided by the amici, the appellants have made a persuasive case for that proposition. But Congress did not sound an uncertain trumpet when it enacted the CDA, and it chose to grant broad protections to internet publishers. Showing that a website operates through a meretricious business model is not enough to strip away those protections. If the evils that the appellants have identified are deemed to outweigh the First Amendment values that drive the CDA, the remedy is through legislation, not through litigation.” — United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, March 14, 2016
- “Congress has declared such websites to be immune from suits arising from such injuries. It is for Congress to change the policy that gave rise to such immunity.” — United States District Court, Eastern District of Missouri, August 15, 2011
- “Congress stuck a balance in favor of free speech in that Congress did not wish to hold liable online publishers for the action of publishing third party speech and thus provided for both a foreclosure from prosecution and an affirmative defense at trial. Congress has spoken on this matter and it is for Congress, not this Court, to revisit.” — Superior Court of the State of California, County of Sacramento, November 16, 2016
