August Update from Congressman Michael R. Turner

Congressman Turner thanked volunteers at Miami Valley Hospital cuddling with infants born addicted to opioids, and discussed his legislation, the CRIB Act.

On August 15, 2017, I visited Miami Valley Hospital’s neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) care unit to see firsthand the work they are doing to heal babies who were born addicted to heroin and other opioids. Miami Valley Hospital recently launched a volunteer Infant Cuddling Program, to comfort babies going through opiate withdrawal. Sadly, some of the babies in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit are suffering with this syndrome due to the use of addictive substances by expectant mothers.

“Activities of social interaction support the neurological development and physiologic stability of NAS babies,” said Amy Clayton, RNC-NIC, BSN, clinical nurse educator for Miami Valley Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit. “Creating a compassionate, comforting, safe environment for the infants is the goal.” Since I was made aware of this aspect of the opioid crisis, I have introduced the CRIB Act (HR 2501) in Congress to help cover the treatment costs of infants going through withdrawal, specifically those suffering from NAS. By expanding access to NAS treatment, we can reduce the number of opiate-addicted newborns, and help give these children a better chance at a healthy start in life. I am extremely thankful to the volunteers in the Infant Cuddling Program who are working every day to ease the discomfort of the most vulnerable victims of the opioid epidemic.

While Congress was out of session during the month of August, I visited several local manufacturers and small businesses, and met with area farmers, community leaders, and everyday citizens during a busy Summer District Work Period. As the summer comes to a close and we fall ahead into September, I would like to share with you some of the highlights of my work in the district during the August recess:
Dayton NAACP President Derrick Foward, Congressman Turner,

and former Dayton NAACP President Jessie Gooding stood together in the wake of
Charlottesville to denounce hate groups.
Congressman Turner spoke at the groundbreaking of the new Montgomery County Fairgrounds, and talked about the constituent services offered by his office.

Congressman Turner visited the Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority’s Maintenance Facility and its CEO Mark Donaghy to learn about the innovative ways it is making transportation easier, more affordable, and more accessible in the Dayton region, and his efforts to increase funding for bus transportation systems in SW Ohio.
Congressman Turner toured the Staub Manufacturing facility after receiving the Spirit of Enterprise award from the Chamber of Commerce for supporting policies in Washington that preserve economic freedom.

Sincerely,

Michael Turner
Member of Congress
